Pretty Pastel Unicorn Cake!

Pretty Unicorn Cake by Juniper Cakery

We make A LOT of super cute and magical unicorn cakes & cupcakes. All of them utterly perfect for kids parties or Christenings! This time we were asked to make a more grown-up unicorn cake. Adorned with bubblegum pink macarons, pastel meringues, 24k gold leaf and a more pretty than adorable unicorn. We think this cake added the perfect amount of grown-up magic to the party!

The pastel unicorn cake was covered in a silky whitened buttercream in our popular Strawberry Milkshake flavour. We then added a soft lavender ombré effect along the base before adding a mix of fun sprinkles. 24k edible gold leaf was then applied before a blush pink drip edged one side of this cutie!

A box full of matching party cupcakes accompanied this pastel unicorn cake! Some were rose swirls of white buttercream finished with 24k gold, others featured pink chocolate drizzles, sprinkles, pretty roses and pastel meringues!

We LOVE drip cakes as they’re usually loaded with so many sweet treats! This pastel dream cake was topped with a flurry of sprinkles (we used ‘Crush’ and ‘Pastel Princess’ both from Shire Bakery), pretty pink macarons, pastel turquoise meringue kisses and pink and lavender roses!

That magical unicorn on top? 100% hand crafted using zero moulds whatsoever. We studied and sketched a few stylised unicorns and horses before experimenting with fondant. In the end it needed to be pretty stable, but the pose couldn’t look static. We decided to have the unicorn stood on an edible cloud to make it durable and have one leg arched up! This also meant that the unicorn could stand a little higher than all the treats on top.

This sure was a fun order to make. What’s not to love right? Unicorn theme! Macarons! Cute colour palette!

Whimsical Pastel Rainbow Unicorn Birthday Cake and Treats!

Adorable pink pastel unicorn birthday cake by Juniper Cakery

Is it bad that we’re both in our 30s and we STILL get excited at anything unicorn related? No? Thought so! This adorable pastel rainbow unicorn birthday cake with silver accents was such a joy to make! We designed and created this two tiered magical beauty along with lots of treats for one lucky 3 year old. It’s hard for us to pin point a favourite part, but that cute rainbow towering up from the top tier is a definite!

Each blush pink tier was finished with pale pink fondant unicorns brushed with a glittering lustre. We added pastel rainbow hair, lavender muzzles, blushed cheeks and silver horns as well as a cheeky smile. We love to make every unicorn cake a little different so we change or tweak things like colours, smiles… even legs. For these we added in etched legs and made the hair a little more sleek and stylised.

To match the little cuties on the cake were lots of circular unicorn face cookies with pastel rainbow hair! These were all in our Madagascan vanilla flavour studded with flecks of vanilla bean. We added edible blush to each unicorn’s face and painted the horns with silver.

To add shape and interest we crafted 3D glittering clouds for each tier to sit alongside the flat clouds. Clouds instantly add an amazing whimsical value to cakes and treats. They’re obviously perfect for rainbows and unicorns too!

This cake was for Libby’s third birthday so we added a starry number 3 on top perched next to a fluffy fondant cloud and bright rainbow. Painted in a glistening edible silver this carried on the theme of the entire cake especially as the birthday girl LOVES stars.

On the front top tier of this unicorn birthday cake we added Libby’s name in silver across a freehand cut cloud in shimmering white fondant!

Along with this super fun birthday cake were lots of cute little treats… like these pastel rainbow cookies that also match the cute unicorn face cookies! In a bubblegum pink, lavender, mint, yellow and blush pink they match perfectly with the fun rainbow nestled on top of the cake. Obviously, we added a little sparkle with a hint of edible lustre!

To match the cake we also created sweet unicorn cupcakes swirled with a rainbow buttercream of pink, soft yellow and mint colours! Each featured a fondant unicorn face smiling and ready to party! Each match the unicorn cookies and figures perched on the cake. They even have pretty blushed cheeks.

We even created lots of mint green dinosaur inspired cupcakes with blushed cheeks and white sprinkles! We nestled each fondant character into a Madagascan vanilla swirled cupcake!

And for the grown-ups at the party were these chic little cupcakes in matching silver cases! Swirled with Madagascan vanilla buttercream and finished with dainty blush macarons flecked with edible silver paint splatters they’re the perfect treats for parents! We filled each macaron with our pink champagne ganache… a white chocolate filling with a reduced Moët pink champagne.

Just another (and closer) shot of one of the pink champagne macaron topped cupcakes… because it’s just so pretty right? These are such popular treats for the soon ensuing dinner party season too!

This entire collection of unicorn and rainbow inspired party treats was ridiculously fun for us to make! When everything begins to come together it’s magical seeing all those cute little unicorn faces. We hope little Libby and all her party guests had an amazing time celebrating her birthday!

Tutorial: Rainbow Pom Pom Cupcakes!

Rainbow pom pom cupcakes by Juniper Cakery

It’s time for another fun unicorn inspired treat! Hooray! This week’s tutorial is super fun and also pretty easy to follow. These fondant / sugar paste ruffle pom poms are ridiculously fun, bright and they’re perfect for party time! You can use the finished edible pom poms to top cupcakes with, add on top of a cake among swirly lollipops or make tiny versions for cake pops!

Materials and tools needed…

Step 01:

Roll out each of your coloured fondant / sugar paste to a thickness of around 2-3mm. Once rolled cut out your circles! You’ll need one of each of the 5 colours per cupcake.

Step 02:

Turning those fondant circles into ruffled pieces is pretty easy! All you need to do is gently fold a circle in half and then into quarters. It pays to be quite light handed with this as you don’t want your ruffles to squish or sag.

Note: If your fondant seems a little too much on the floppy side chances are your ruffle pieces will end up just being folded pieces of sugar paste. If this happens try adding a little CMC or tylo powder (1 teaspoon per 250g of fondant is a general rule of thumb).

Step 03:

Now you can arrange your little ruffled pieces however you like. We wanted the top ruffles to be pink so we created our lower half of the pom pom with our yellow, mint, purple and turquoise pieces first! When you’re happy with the look stick the pieces together with a little edible glue!

Note: Try not to add too much edible glue as things could get messy! Glue squishing or seeping out of work also never looks good.

Step 04:

Add small pieces of bubble wrap (or even paper kitchen towel) to help your ruffles keep their shape as they set!

Yay! Party ready unicorn-inspired cupcakes that are ridiculously fun! You can even add in golden painted unicorn horns made from fondant nestled into the ruffles to go super unicorn themed; opt for different colours for themed parties or make a huge version to add on top of an iced birthday cake (note… you may need a few more ruffle circle pieces for that cool idea).
