Wild English Countryside Semi-Naked Wedding Cake!

Beautiful English countryside semi-naked wedding cake by Juniper Cakery

Naked cakes and semi-naked cakes are always exciting to create. We LOVE lots of elements in nature so it’s great for us to work with fresh florals, quirky herbs, and tempting fruits. This cake was definitely no exception! Who wouldn’t love an English countryside semi-naked wedding cake?

Our main requests for this cake from the couple involved lots of country garden florals and that it wasn’t too contemporary in look. We sketched out rough ideas of placement before we kept going back to one that featured flowers and berries loaded onto two alternate tiers. We thought the fullness would mimic country gardens closely filled with herb pots and rose bushes.

The more heavier floral arrangements were first planned or ‘mapped’ out on alternate tiers. We began with the very top tier so that the cake instantly had extra height. One trick is to position the rose slightly upwards so it shows off the rose at a really pretty angle. It also gives the illusion of the large bloom roses being a little taller too. Then any draping florals or foliage get added. In this case it was the white freesias that hang elegantly along the tiers. Finally, we filled it in with small flowers, herbs and some fruits.

The whole point of a naked or semi-naked cake is rustic wilderness. With that in mind we still like to have a little ‘form’ to our designs. Even more laid-back or random versions take a fair bit of planning. We’re often walking back and forth asking each other if a cluster of fruit makes it look off balance or if a rose perched on top looks odd. Taking snaps on our iPads helps too. If you’re not sure taking a picture distances yourself from it a little.

Herbs are an amazing and natural way to add to a semi-naked wedding cake. A lot of people are afraid to use them because they generally get used to flavour savoury food, but they add a fun quirky look and not much flavour when used to decorate. For this cake we used rosemary (our favourite… just look at those feather-y like plumes!) and thyme. We actually grow all our own herbs  too (Country Cream Oregano, Curly Mint, Lemon Balm, French Golden Oregano, Rosemary, Archer’s Gold Thyme, Curled Parsley…).

Grand White on White Wedding Cake at Rise Hall!

White on white wedding cake at Rise Hall by Juniper Cakery

We get ridiculously excited about every single cake we make. Sometimes, though, a mix of pretty decorative techniques and an elegant colour palette means that we count the days until the big day! This white on white 5 tiered beauty is definitely one of those designs. Plus, just just look at that gorgeous muted grey and gold wall in the ballroom at Rise Hall!

With a heavily fondant frilled bottom tier, ornate damask design and shimmering lustre effects with an acanthus leaf frame, champagne gold piped monogram and a corsage of bright white florals this cake relies on a balance of decorative elements to make it’s statement. We love every single part of it.

Our ruffles are pretty popular and while they are ridiculously laborious they’re worth it in the end. They add the perfect feel of movement and softness too. The next tier mimics historic flocked wallpaper with a glimmering lustre base underneath the royal icing damask. Then the third had to show off a bit more lustre! Seriously, we would probably lustre every cake if we could.

Finally the top two tiers. A sleek white plain tier embellished with a white acanthus leaf frame surrounding champagne gold piped initials of the happy couple! We sketched out a few fonts before manipulating them to fit the space we needed. Then we added some flourish to the ends and tested placements. After that we piped everything free hand before painting in a soft glittering champagne gold edible paint.

Ruffles upon ruffles! Our frilly fondant detailing takes hours to do. We create them out of thinly rolled out fondant in 6-8″ strips and ruffled them by hand individually. We love adding texture to a cake and edible frills are definitely one of the best ways to do this.

The pretty florals were kept simple for this cake. Large billowing yet cupped white peonies with ruffled centres framed one side of the top tier. Then accents of white and champagne gold dotted orchids and tiny hydrangeas were added to the cake.

Our Cakes in Bridal Guide Magazine – January 2017!

Strawberry naked cake by Juniper Cakery

Did you spot two of our cakes in an utterly gorgeous spread for Bridal Guide magazine in the USA? We’ve been insanely busy so far this year that we’re a little bit late on the blog-wagon about this, but here it is! Not one, but two of our cakes were featured by the fabulous Bridal Guide magazine! One is perfectly pretty in pink with a carefree naked cake look adorned with fresh roses whist the other design takes on the chalkboard trend and pairs it with a romantic countryside feel!

Pretty Strawberry Milkshake naked cake by Juniper Cakery

This petite single tier naked cake is perfect for intimate weddings, fun bridal showers or an impromptu engagement party. We whipped this design up in our popular Strawberry Milkshake flavour… Madagascan vanilla cake filled and lightly smothered with Belgian white chocolate and strawberry buttercream.

Adorned with blush Strawberry Milkshake macarons, soft pink large bloom roses, white freesias, oversized shimmering edible pearls and fluffy gypsophelia this cake is dainty and romantic.

Naked cakes are getting to be one of our most requested style. They’re perfect for birthdays, big events or even just to say a huge thank you! Plus, a lot of people these days aren’t too keen on the taste or texture of fondant / sugar paste icing. For weddings or grown-up get togethers it’s easy to opt for patisserie sweets and macarons, fresh roses, gold sequin drips or meringue kisses. For more of a party feel bright candy, chopped up chocolate bars, vibrant macarons, chocolate drips and lollipops would make a statement cake!

Rustic chalkboard wedding cake with white open peonies, peach blossoms and seeded eucalyptus by Juniper Cakery

This gorgeously rustic-inspired design is easily one of our all-tie favourites! It’s a softer take on the chalkboard trend that emerged 2015-16. We took away the sudden harshness of the black tier by pairing it with soft greens, peach, white, ruffled textures, pretty sugar flowers, realistic fondant blackberries and touches of gold throughout. Adding the voluminous fondant frills along the bottom tier and matching them with the soft look of the white peonies helped give this design a more-romantic and carefree feel.

We also softened the darkness of the middle tier by playing around with sugar flower arrangements. Adding just a simple crown on top drew too much attention to the cake’s chalkboard tier and scattering sugar florals on alternating tiers looked too busy. In the end we create a crescent or ‘wreath’ out of handmade seeded eucalyptus, our signature open peonies, tiny peach blossoms, gold painted berries and glistening blackberries (which are made out of sugar).

Floral Crown Cake With Tulips, Gardenias and Sweet Peas!

floral-crown-cake-juniper-cakery-3

Here’s a pretty peach, white and gold single tier that we created. This cake is actually from 2015… but we’ve found ourselves so busy that we haven’t had the change to work on a blog post for it until now! It’s wonderfully Summer-y and if you look close enough you’ll spot little 24k gold painted bees amongst the flowers and berries!

Floral crown cake with sugar gardenias by Juniper Cakery

This sweet and petite design actually inspired this gorgeous peony wedding cake we created in July for Jenny and Harry. It’s one of those small cakes that can easily be re-designed into something grander.

The floral crown that sits underneath the cake was built around a shallow polystyrene separator so flowers could both burst outwards and sit slightly under. We created lots of sugar florals with a soft yellow, peach, white, green, gold and pink colour palette that sit elegantly around the pearl studded cake. The blooms and blossoms include… a David Autin-type rose, tulips, sweet peas, gardenias, sweet pea tendrils, berries, rose leaves and gardenia buds.

With so many gorgeous sugar flowers decorating the base of the cake it made sense to keep the rest of the design simple. After icing it in white Satin Ice fondant we decided to add little pearls gradually spacing out down the tier. We whipped up some royal icing and with a PME Supatube No. 2 piping tip we spent what seemed like a lifetime piping each pearl individually around the cake. It’s l-o-n-g work and our hands cramped multiple times, but the end result sure was worth it.

Though this cake hasn’t been blogged about until now we managed to put it up on our social media, received several enquires for it and created a bespoke version of it for a lovely wedding! Plus, it was one of the cakes featured alongside our interview in Wedding Cakes magazine (which you can get a copy of here).

Open Peony, Ruffled Tulips and Damask Cake!

Damask and open peony cake by Juniper Cakery

Yay! We love all kinds of cakes, but we sure do love single tier cakes; especially when given the chance to make them stand out a bit more than normal. Single tier cakes can look a little underwhelming due to the size, but there’s always a way to up the glam and bespoke factor to them. We like to play with colour as well as texture and decorative features like our handmade sugar flowers. This pretty damask stencilled design was given a fresh and bright colour scheme plus a touch of luxury with a glimmering lustre effect.

For this petite beauty our brief was for something pretty with flowers (especially tulips). One tier cakes can be a little daunting because generally there’s not too much space to work with. We began with sketches of a bundle of sugar flowers incorporating bright yellow tulips, clean white freesias and hydrangeas and then a focal open peony. Designs for the sides of the cake included piped pearls, brush embroidery lace, and even Georgian architectural moulding around the base before we settled on lustreing the iced surface and applying a matt royal icing damask print.

Underneath all of that lovely edible decor of this damask cake is a soft and delicious classic Victoria sponge cake with creamy Madagascan vanilla bean infused buttercream and our homemade strawberry preserve packed with fresh British strawberries.

The open peony is pretty much our signature flower. It’s huge (usually around 5-6 inches in diameter), eye-catching and we absolutely love the rounded and cupped shape it creates once we’ve taped and dried them. If anyone is looking for a floral cake that they need to add a bit of drama to we almost instantly suggest this flower.

Surrounding the bright pink open peony are large golden yellow tulips with lightly ruffled edges, white hydrangea blossoms with pale green dusted centres, textured peony leaves and wonderfully carefree freesia blooms!
