Gold Sequin Drip Wedding Cake with Bright Florals!

Gold sequin drip wedding cake by Juniper Cakery

Anyone who knows us will know that we love anything with a ‘natural glamour’ feel to it. Eye-catching florals, luxurious metallics and a little touch of something wild and untamed. This cake, and it’s gorgeous styled set-up, definitely encompasses all of those things! Obviously, we’re huge fans of a gold sequin drip wedding cake too.

Glamorous rustic gold sequin drip wedding cake!

We created this rustic buttercream cake for the lovely Katie and Chris’ big day! Two very tall tiers (around 7″ deep) finished with a messy white buttercream effect, glam gold sequin drip and a touch of 24k gold leaf! The deep bottom tier was in the couple’s favourite flavour… Coconut and lemon; fluffy Madagascan vanilla cake filled with our Sicilian lemon curd and creamy coconut infused buttercream. For a fun surprise the top tier was a bright rainbow cake with red, yellow, green and purple layers filled with our popular Taittinger champagne and strawberry preserve and vanilla bean buttercream!

How gorgeous are these flowers supplied by the wonderful Forage and Blossom? We fell in love with the teeny tiny peach roses. We dressed the cake with it’s pretty blooms, fresh macarons and sweet meringue kisses at the venue, which was fun. It’s great to work in the finished setting. Usually, we like to finalise everything before delivery and then do a few small adjustments. It was amazing to see the gorgeous marquee set up at the bride’s family home and finish the cake surrounded by a bright fresh floral adorned vintage dressing table!

Katie and Chris opted for our freshly made macarons and meringue kisses too! Macarons are perfect on a gold sequin drip wedding cake! Flavours included our popular Golden Salted Caramel flavour studded with glistening edible sequins filled with our homemade salted caramel sauce. The pretty white macarons feature a luxuriously fun gold splatter and a Vanilla and White Chocolate truffle ganache filling.

We loved the gold mirror topper the couple found for their wedding too! It works perfectly with the golden hints on the cake. We nestled it off to the side so it balanced out the top tier decorations and that pretty gold sequin drip. We also added in a white candy melt ‘sail’ perched behind the florals alongside the gold topper. That added a nice bit of height and drama without taking away focus from the roses and foliage!

We hope Katie and Chris enjoyed an amazing day! We love delivering and setting up every cake, but this was such a gorgeous marquee wedding! Lots of thanks to Forage and Blossom flowers and Eden & Eve wedding planning too for the stunning florals and set up!

What an amazing start to our year! We just found out that we’ve been shortlisted in the Best Wedding Cake Company category of The UK Wedding Awards 2017! How fabulous is that? We’re so excited to make the final list. We work incredibly hard on everything we design and create from dainty macaron favours to towering wedding centrepieces. Plus we LOVE what we do so it’s incredibly honouring to be nominated! Vote for Juniper Cakery here!

Anyway, we thought we’d re-cap on some of the gorgeous wedding cakes we’ve created. Rococo adorned tiers, carefree naked and semi-naked cakes and glamorous modern designs.

Peony ruffle wedding cake by Juniper Cakery

This cake is a firm favourite. It even inspired our branding and logo! This four tiered beauty was created for a lovely couple who weren’t quite sure what they wanted from their wedding cake, but had the most on-trend venue styling! We took details from their golden table runners, romantic colour palette, and glittering invites to help with the design. The bottom tier features soft pink ruffled fondant. The rest of the cake is studded with gold edible sequins that topple down from the top. Three huge (and entirely hand made by us) blush pink sugar peonies adorn the top in a crescent formation with snowberries and peony leaves.

Rustic chalkboard wedding cake with white open peonies, peach blossoms and seeded eucalyptus by Juniper Cakery

Another definite favourite. We love the movement and light feeling of this rustic yet glam design. Our signature open peonies are our most requested sugar flower and this time we created them in a lovely pristine white. They were then surrounded with sage greens, duck egg blue, peach, purple and hints of gold from the blossoms, blackberries and seeded eucalyptus leaves we created. We also incorporated a bit of cake trend in the form of a subtle black chalkboard tier nestled between all the ruffles and florals!

Pink peony Rococo wedding cake by Juniper Cakery

Here’s one pretty in pink Rococo-inspired design. All tiers are a light ice pink that feature a golden acanthus leaf edged frame. We added small details to the frame in the form of tiny gilded bees too. Perched onto the edges of two tiers are light pink sugar peonies surrounded by ice pink berries, white blossoms and white sugar hydrangeas. For extra height we then added a silk bridal tulle to the very tip held in place with delicate sugar flowers.

This beautiful floral crown-inspired design was created for a couple marrying at the gorgeous Wrea Head Hall! All three bright white tiers were hand piped with tiny shimmering pearls that gradually clustered towards the top of the cake. The entire cake was then assembled on top of a shallow false base in order for the all the sugar flowers to burst from underneath! Florals included…blush pink peonies with silver painted pistil centres, lavender hydrangeas, glittering Brunia berries, soft green rose leaves, white ranunculus blooms, large white roses (to represent Yorkshire) and silver fern leaves (to represent New Zealand)!

Cherry pink semi-naked wedding cake by Juniper Cakery

This was one amazingly fragrant wedding cake! It was made for a fun-loving couple who absolutely loved anything cherry flavoured. Our brief was… anything with cherries, bright pink, semi-naked style and to surprise them on the big day! We ended up creating a vibrant Black Forest Gateau inspired cake with extra tall tiers. We smoothed a bright pink kirsch inspired buttercream around each tier before adorning each with fresh cherries, rosemary sprigs, pink roses, rose leaves and cherry inspired macarons (Sour Cherry and Cherry Ripple).

We loved this elegant wedding cake and really did not want to let it go! Created for a couple whose palette was white, gold and dark green it’s three tiers were extended with a separator full of gilded sugar Dogwood blossoms, dark hunter green leaves and golden berries. Each tier was then edged with ornate Rococo-inspired acanthus leaves and ferns which were then hand-painted. To add extra height and drama our large white roses were added to the top tier surrounded by wired acanthus leaves, smaller Dogwood flowers and glistening fondant berries.

Autumn naked wedding cake by Juniper Cakery

Naked cakes are still hugely popular when it comes to weddings! We created this rose adorned design for a couple who wanted an autumnal themed cake with an orange and coral colour palette. We finished it’s bare tiers with lots of florals and fruits from large bloom roses, miniature rose buds, thyme, rosemary, rose leaves, blueberries, sliced figs, physalis berries, red currents and sprigs of lavender!

Gold lace wedding cake by Juniper Cakery

Fit for a glamorous reception this gold and white wedding cake features oversized white sugar peonies with large diamanté centres that glitter as you view the cake! We added a little flourish with gold painted leaves extending out from the flurry of white florals perched on top too. Gilded leaves were also added around the base of the cake to create an almost lifted cake stand effect. We built the entire design on top of a hidden base before carefully wrapping a branch of golden sugar leaves around it. We then hand-piped royal icing peonies in a gold/lace style extending from the bottom tier upwards in the centre, then from the top. This design took hours upon hours to finish from the sketch after sketch with various amendments, large handmade individually wired sugar peonies, multiple gold leaves and the intricate piped lacework.

Our Exclusive Interview in Wedding Cakes Magazine!

Damask tulip and peony cake by Juniper Cakery

We’re (almost) famous! We’ve ooh-ed and ahh-ed at the wonderful designs that featured in the amazing Wedding Cakes magazine for some time. Now not only have we’ve found our own work adorning their glossy pages, but we’re lucky enough to have been interviewed and featured in their ‘Meet the Designer’ spread! On our blog, in consultations and even on social media we’ve briefly mentioned our backgrounds, but if you’re super nosey about how we started then this interview may hopefully be a good read! In the beginning both our future careers involved dusty lecture halls and endless thesis proposals before we found ourselves almost permanently covered in icing sugar a few years later. Yep, Juniper Cakery was born out of a nervous tick we both developed whilst trying to find the perfect Masters degrees.

Peony Ruffle Wedding Cake by Juniper Cakery

Over a year later and we STILL love this peony ruffle wedding cake. It was inspired by a couple’s (excellent) choice of gold sequin table runners and floral centrepieces. After going through graphic designers and brand consultants we just didn’t gel with we ended up re-designing and re-branding our business by ourselves with this glamorous cake as our main source of inspiration. The gold sequins = celebration and (of course) champagne bubbles… obviously the perfect accompaniments for cake. Our new branding colours then centred around pink, white and gold.

One of the best things about this cake is the movement. After sketching it and then staring at the end cake for some time we realised that it looked like ruffled gown bedecked with nature – a bit like a Pre-Raphaelite muse really. Fondant ruffles are one of our favourite design elements to include on any cake and we receive a lot of compliments and even class requests for it. We learned how to do ours the Maggie Austin way at first, but her top secret trick terrified us so we developed our own method to get the best super textured look.

Pink Black Forest Gateau Naked Cake by Juniper Cakery

This two tiered beauty was one cherry explosion! The smell was insanely tempting as it was a chocolate cake filled with Morello cherry preserve, smoothed with Kirsch infused buttercream and then adorned with fresh roses, juicy cherries and cherry flavoured macarons (Cherry Ripple and Sour Cherry).

We turned a simple and petite design into a mini show-stopper with a floral crown of gardenias, sweet peas, 24k gold bees, tulips and ‘Juliet’ roses wrapped around the base of royal icing pearl studded cake. We loved adding in those gold painted berries, bees and also the swirls of sweet pea tendrils!

This naked cake was made super glam with 24k gold dusted peanut butter macarons, gold silk eucalyptus leaves, pink macarons and large blooming bubblegum pink roses.

Pretty Blue Ombré Ruffled Wedding Cake!

Ombré ruffle wedding cake with peony rose and daisies by Juniper Cakery

Here’s a super pretty ruffled wedding cake that we just couldn’t wait to work on and finish since it was booked in! Everything about this two tiered beauty perfectly encompassed Springtime for us from the petite sunny daisies, luxuriously glistening gold sequins, playful blue ombré ruffles and full peony rose.

Pretty Blue Ombré Ruffled Wedding Cake!

The design for this cake was based on our popular peony ruffled wedding cake which we created last year for a couple with a ‘glamour’ themed wedding reception. For this blue ruffled creation the theme was vintage with a lovely fresh colour palette of duck egg blues, white, blush pink, gold and hints of soft yellows. We added in a small amount of green due to the slender sugar peony leaves we used which added to the sweet playful feel of the overall design.

Fondant ruffles by Juniper Cakery

Ah those fondant frills and ruffles… they take an absolute age to make, but they’re worth it in the end. Those gorgeous duck egg blue ombré frills took around 5 labour intensive hours to cut, frill and attach all together. Ruffles make there perfect textured element to a wedding cake as they look so soft, full and romantic. We learned how to frill fondant the Maggie Austin way, but we ended up modifying her technique to suit how we like to work and because we’re in a super humid area. We get asked how we achieve such a ruffled look a lot, but it’s top secret!

Another aspect of this cake we were pretty excited about were the carefree florals of tiny daisies paired with a wonderfully textured main flower based on a David Austin ‘Gentle Hermione’ rose. To make the rose larger we concentrated on wiring every single petal (even the tiny ones) individually and made a total of 58 blush tinted petals to arrange and tape together. The main floral ended up almost 4 inches wide! For wedding cakes the addition of slightly larger flowers not only help a design look more coherent and provide a focal point, but they can make a cake look taller and more grand. Using larger florals and also foliage extend past the height of a cake gives the illusion that a cake a taller and even a little more slender than it actually is!

Decadent edible gold sequins toppling down a wedding tier is another favourite of ours. We hand paint ours with 24k gold dust whipped into an edible paint mixture once we’ve added the initial texture or ‘sequins’ onto the cake. The glistening sequins were added to represent vintage polka dots (something the bridge absolutely loved) as well as a touch of luxury!

After spending so much time and energy on each design it’s always hard to see it go, but it’s nice to see them all go to lovely homes and venues! A huge congratulations to Charlotte and Keiren who enjoyed a lovely sunny Spring day over at the Sandburn Hall outside of York!
